For Love of Country

Recently I had the opportunity to connect with a dear friend. We commuted together and developed a great friendship. She shared her story of coming to Canada. There was one piece of the story I had missed as we spoke.

I was heartbroken to learn about the violations of human rights in her homeland of Venezuela. A country rich in culture, natural resources and amazing people. All this stripped for political power and corruption.
As I listened to her reports given to her by family and friends, I wondered what could we do to help. There is seldom reports in the media. The government has blocked any form of coverage on any instances that might shed light on what’s happening.
Now Venezuela is not unique in its own situation but there are other places around the world where people are stripped of their freedom and their lives are threatened for what they know, say, think, believe or do.
This July 1st marks Canada’s 150th birthday. As a village of people spirited and committed to serving each other, I recognized how blessed we are. The land is but part of the planet we all share.  Our individual nations collectively have migrated here. Some sooner than others, some 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th generation. Then there are our native people. Their heritage we hold strong.
While we share the liberties that so many others sort after, let us also recognize the value of respecting and caring for the land.
So as I celebrate Canada Day, I also celebrate the land. The place we call home. As Canadians, we are passionate about our heritage, our origins and the stand we take for meaning.  This is the flag that flies high on the pinnacle of all Canadians. Passion and the love of country.
Let’s celebrate our freedom, but let us recognize that others wish for it too. The blessing of a nation rich in natural resources, human ingenuity, history, heritage, diversity, and love of country.  We are Canada, a beacon to the world.
For love of country, our anthem strong;
Sang with vigour, the words on which we stand.
For love of country, we the people be;
The hope of our generation, our belief we see.
For love of country, we remember;
The forming of a nation, the institution for all member.
For love of country, tranny will fall;
The fortitude of its people, rest on the words of their song.

 (English Version)

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
What’s the national anthem of your native land?
